Rugs look great on the stone and tile floors that are so prevalent in the Southwest and will help define your spaces with richness and warmth. There are so many choices that it can be overwhelming when it comes to selecting rugs and carpets for your home. If there is a particular look that you love, start with that type.

Orientals and Kilims fit in well with Southwest Contemporary and Spanish, as well as, French, English and the Italian, Old World traditional looks. Orientals come from the Middle East, India, Pakistan and China. If they are antique, wool or silk and hand tied they can run into thousands of dollars. Reproductions and machine made rugs are less expensive but will not have the sheen, reversibility and beauty of those that are handmade of natural fibers.

If you prefer the Navajo style rugs, authentic ones are an investment just as the Orientals are. They will complement a variety of decorating styles and are not limited to Southwestern or Santa Fe themes. They can also look great in a contemporary setting. Again, reproductions can be purchased for a fraction of the price, with the same quality concerns.

Contemporary styled rugs, that may be more in keeping with your decorating theme, can be custom made to your own design by carpet manufacturers. These are a great way to bring color into a monochromatic room or anchor a furniture grouping. Standard carpeting can be cut with a border or design in another color. Only your imagaination limits you here.

If you have a casual setting or outdoor room, consider the sisal and jute rugs. They look great on flagstone, brick and polished concrete and are an inexpensive way to create a cozier feel to a patio. Check for weather resistance and durability if your outdoor room is not protected.
